Reading Emotion from the Human Face

It is becoming increasingly plausible that computers may not only recognise who a person is, but also begin to infer something about how they feel. Subtle changes around the eyes, mouth and brow can reveal patterns associated with expressions such as happiness, surprise, anger, sadness, fear and disgust. By tracking these changes in video and combining them with statistical pattern recognition, it may be possible to build systems that estimate emotional state automatically.

The real potential lies in making machines more responsive to people. A computer that can detect frustration, confusion or engagement could adapt the way it teaches, assists or communicates. Similar ideas could have applications in healthcare, security, human computer interaction and behavioural analysis, particularly when facial information is combined with voice, body movement or physiological signals.

The challenge is that emotion is not simply a facial pattern. People express themselves differently, expressions can be deliberately controlled, and context matters greatly. The interesting question is therefore not whether a machine can label a face, but whether it can begin to understand enough of human behaviour to interact with us in a more natural and intelligent way.
